7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your 7-day Northern Tanzania safari begins in Arusha, where you meet your safari guide and drive toward Tarangire National Park. The park is famous for its large elephant populations, ancient baobab trees and diverse wildlife.
Enjoy your first game drive as you explore Tarangire’s landscapes in search of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, lions and other wildlife.
After the game drive, continue to your safari lodge or camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara
After breakfast, continue toward Lake Manyara National Park. The park offers a dramatic combination of forest, open plains and the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
A game drive provides opportunities to see elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos and a variety of bird species.
In the afternoon, continue to your accommodation for dinner and relaxation.
Day 3: Lake Manyara to Serengeti
Today you head toward the highlight of your 7 day Serengeti safari itinerary — Serengeti National Park.
The journey itself is part of the adventure, with changing landscapes as you leave the Ngorongoro highlands and enter the vast Serengeti plains.
Depending on your arrival time, enjoy an afternoon game drive before heading to your lodge or camp.
Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Safari
Wake up in the heart of the Serengeti and prepare for a full day of wildlife viewing.
The Serengeti is renowned for its vast plains, exceptional predator sightings and the Great Migration. Depending on the season and location of the herds, your guide will choose the best areas for game viewing.
Keep an eye out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and wildebeest.
A full-day Serengeti safari gives you more time to explore away from the main routes and enjoy the changing scenery.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park
Enjoy another full day in the Serengeti, giving you more time to explore different areas of the park and search for wildlife.
The day may include early-morning and afternoon game drives, depending on your preferred schedule. Your guide will choose the best areas to explore based on recent wildlife sightings and seasonal conditions.

Why Choose a 7-Day Tanzania Safari?
Seven days provides a good balance between variety and time in the parks.
Instead of visiting only one or two destinations, this itinerary allows you to experience several of Tanzania’s most important safari areas while still spending multiple days in Serengeti.
A seven-day journey allows you to:
- Experience Tarangire’s elephant-rich landscapes
- Explore Lake Manyara and its diverse habitats
- Spend several days in Serengeti
- Enjoy both morning and afternoon game drives
- Have time to search for predators and other wildlife
- Experience the dramatic landscapes of Ngorongoro
- Travel through different ecosystems within northern Tanzania
- Enjoy a more complete safari experience
The result is a journey that combines wildlife, scenery, and variety rather than focusing on a single park.
What Wildlife Can You Expect?
Tanzania’s northern safari circuit is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife.
Elephants
Elephants can be encountered throughout the safari, with Tarangire particularly well known for its elephant populations.
Watching elephants move through the woodland or gather around water is often one of the memorable experiences of a Tanzania safari.
Lions and Other Predators
Serengeti provides excellent opportunities to search for predators.
Lions are frequently encountered, while cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and other carnivores may also be seen depending on the location, season, and conditions.
Wildebeest and Zebra
Wildebeest and zebra are among the most recognizable animals of the Serengeti ecosystem.
Their movements vary according to seasonal conditions, and travelers visiting during migration periods may encounter large concentrations of animals across the plains.
Giraffes and Buffalo
Giraffes and buffalo can be encountered in several areas along the northern safari circuit.
Seeing these animals against the backdrop of Tanzania’s changing landscapes adds variety to the game drives.
Rhinos
Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the better opportunities on this itinerary to search for the endangered black rhinoceros.
Sightings are never guaranteed, but the crater’s concentrated wildlife makes it an important destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Birdlife
Bird lovers will also find plenty to enjoy.
The different habitats visited during the safari support a wide variety of bird species, from woodland and grassland birds to species associated with lakes and wetlands.
When Is the Best Time for This Safari?
The northern Tanzania safari circuit can be visited throughout the year, but different seasons offer different experiences.
The dry season is generally popular for wildlife viewing because animals can become easier to locate around remaining water sources and vegetation is often less dense.
The wetter months bring greener landscapes, migratory birdlife, and seasonal changes across the parks.
If seeing the Great Migration is a priority, the itinerary and travel dates should be planned according to the expected location of the herds rather than relying on a fixed annual schedule.
Because wildlife movements are influenced by rainfall
Where to Stay For the 7 Days Safari?
Accommodation plays an important role when planning a journey around the Mara River.
Permanent Lodges and Camps
Permanent properties can provide a comfortable base for exploring Northern Serengeti. They are well suited to travelers who prefer established facilities, spacious rooms, and a more traditional lodge experience.
Seasonal and Mobile Camps
Seasonal or mobile camps can offer a more intimate connection with the landscape. Some are positioned according to seasonal wildlife movements, potentially bringing you closer to the areas where the herds are traveling.
How to Choose
The right accommodation depends on more than distance from the river.
Consider the time of year, how much time you want to spend on game drives, your preferred level of comfort, and whether you value a permanent property or a more seasonal wilderness experience.
When planning your journey, accommodation should work together with the itinerary rather than being selected separately.
